In many civilizations objects were and are believed to house spirits. Even today, we look at a gourd hoping to discover what it can be.  Some hear the gourd whisper to us – "I’m funny and cute – I’m a home for others - I’m a swan, a landscape, a Kachina, a herd of horses, or a solitary figure."  When artist meets gourd, there is a moment of inspiration.  The artist sees how to enhance the beauty and use of the gourd.  We choose to call that moment and inspiration - "The Spirit of the Gourds".
